I’m not sure that there is that much evidence of over-hiring in tech from the Pandemic. Typically one of the better gauges of what the industry is doing is tracking the number of recruiters reaching out and the relative hourly rates being offered. These dropped dramatically in 2023, well before the current AI narratives - but it’s worth noting that the openings and rates had been consistent for nearly 10 years before that. 2020 and 2021 were not dramatically different or better.
And no company that I know of has (in about a year), has boasted about replacing workers with AI because it’s toxic to do so. I think you’ve bought into an industry PR narrative here - although you are also correct about the tech not actually being ready.
Contradictory? Not really. The perception (not reality) of AI readiness is leading to massive layoffs which aren’t being called that. And many of those people will likely be rehired. The other thing that is actually getting announced is companies cutting costs in order to fund AI capex.
