I think the camera put certain kinds of artists out of work. The paintbrush no doubt did, as well. I learned to draw by copying Marvel comics, then album covers, then fantasy painters . . . It's how artists always learn, by coping other artists. I can remember just a few years ago, when it was Photoshop that people said was cheating at art. Now, artists use it, and it's a tool for them, and nobody bats an eye. I also think of the bicycle, and how that was supposedly gonna be the end of soceity - girls would be more promiscuous, youth would run away from home more, people's legs would atrophy . . . you name. The Flat Earth Society was there to tell their dumbass pointless regressive side of things. In my opinion, AI art will threaten three general areas of human art: 1) Small freelance graphic design illustration work in magazines, on websites, etc. If it need to be something very specific, you'll still have humans who can get that result, but yeah, I think AI will be a better way to do it. We have a story about a dog jumping a fence, and it's the size of business card? Yes, a job for AI. 2) Fine artists who get $15 million to sketch a banana. Yes, it will be harder to justify those prices. AI can produce million dollar CRAP just fine, and way cheaper. 3) Animators. The ones who do the reptitive sketching in between key frames. That sort of thing. Many Disney artists will be liberated from their slave pits. Beyond that, no, the human touch is the objective and so at various endpoints and various levels human will still very much involved, as will human talent. Just like Photoshop. Maybe I'm old, but I've heard every single argument against AI art used against Photoshop for decades. There aren't many artists now who would say painting with Photoshop takes no talent. Because it stil does, just in a different way. I suspect AI art will similarly just integrate into society - not in glaring, crappy ways, I don't think we'd digest that - but in all those small spaces where graphic designers used to make too much money for work that is beneath them anyhow.
