Why are these guys so convinced that rote learning is not present in schools. In my experience as a parent ALL time devotated to learning to read is devoted to phonics. I see people everywhere trying to learn by rote. Duolingo, with its millions of users is rote learning. There original point that people should interact with AI like they interact with other humans is key. Classrooms may be full but they are full of people learning alone with screens and worksheets. Contructing knowledge socially (with other humans) is what we don't do.
