I'm really pessimistic about people's resilience in holding on to what makes us human, and more generally holding on to any sense of what makes a thing a thing. Narcissism has long since beceme the primary mental affliction of society. I'd say it has everything to do with mass media under capitalism, dating back to at least the invention of the loudspeaker, but it became ballistic under neoliberalism since the 1970s and left the orbit in the internet era. This has led to many grotesque things, like boybands being celebrated as "artists". And to "comedians" whose routine consists of not much more than a comedy-like cadence. And their mass audience eagerly laps it up. Their laughter is as hollow as the comedy on stage (Dane Cook is just one example). And this makes me pessimistic about whether the narcissistic mass of people will be able to withstand AI. There are already people who regard AI as their friend. There are literal AI cults celebrating AI as not only sentient but god-like. It's impossible to explain to these people how LLMs function and that there is zero soul behind any of it.
