AI art can look good, it’s at the point where it can look realistic, but I have two drawings in my room that I think perfectly explain why AI art will never be art. In my room, hanging above my bed, I have some fashion sketches; these flower ball gown things. I made them in an art camp last summer. AI can make that kinda thing easily, I see it all over on Pinterest. But AI hasn’t gone to a summer camp for the past few years specifically choosing classes that would help it become a better artist. It hasn’t drawn the same theme to see how it improved over time. It doesn’t have the eraser marks and misplaced lines that traditional art does. The second is a painting that my sister gave to me last year. Three rainforest frogs and a few mushrooms with rainbows and a pink patchy background. My sister hates mushrooms, she finds them disgusting (I do too, that’s why I love them) but she still looked up pictures and spent enough time on them that they look extremely realistic. AI can’t do that; it doesn’t have feelings. My sister could have used AI and printed it out and pasted it on a canvas, but she didn’t. She did it because she wanted to, you can see it in the highlights of the frogs eyes to the way every line was so carefully brushed on. AI is a real threat, but it will never be real. That one unfinished drawing created by a man who died of aids before he could complete it? AI could make that, but it will never be the same once you know who made it and why.
