I saw an argument that the prompter is the artist and the ai is their pen, pencil, brush etc and that was how they apply their creativity… Ignoring the commission arguments they make (because people who ask for commissions don’t act like they themselves made the art with their money or whatever) the machine is the “artist” here because that’s the one “applying creativity” since it’s actually generating a thing. Because of this fundamental problem this means the prompter and the ai are two separate entities (and since all art/media is a communicative creation between an individual and their own skills and experience) the prompter is basically a nobody in this scenario. They thought about an idea but didn’t make it, they thought about driving but stayed inside, they thought about thought about getting out of bed, but didn’t. The product the machine makes is separated from any person in the process, and because it doesn’t use other people’s art in the same way people do when they create. Obviously not every piece of created art or media is the same and some are definitely more nebulous than others, like writing compared to pottery, but even those have the human quality of limitation. They didn’t pull from all available sources to create when they did, they made something using their unique thought process, time, and skill for it. It wasn’t just handed over. I commend the people who at least WANT to get better at art, but haven’t taken that first step; but only because there’s people out there who intend to defend and use ai image generation until they die. Be better or stay soulless I say.
