I can't remember who said this but if AI were to be a real threat to humanity it isn't because of any malice or awareness of what it is doing, it just happens to have a goal that it was tasked with, and we just got in the way. Like a construction crew building a road. They aren't seeking to destroy the ant colony, they were only trying to build a road, and were not even aware of the ants.
I think the real threat of AI is how it can convince/manipulate the general population. AI then isn't the threat but how human thought and behavior change because of AI. I lean toward to "the man in the Chinese room" when it comes to AI. AI is simply a pattern recognition tool. A very useful tool. It is like a self sharpening knife.
