When the AI stuff first started cropping up I fell into the camp of "it's another tool to help bring your creative vision to life, as long as you're not claiming it as your own work what's the harm?" started teaching myself to draw for fun, and surrounding myself with people who were artists, and came to realize - the sentiment of "AI takes inspiration the same way humans do", while debatably technically correct, misses some crucial details which would be difficult to put to words concisely - AI fundamentally understands concepts differently than humans do, and trying to describe what you want to it can be imprecise or impossible - something that likely can't really be changed by iterating on the current technology - AI can only replicate what it knows. Sure, it can take pieces of different things it knows and kinda put together a new thing based on that, but the precise details get lost - too complex an idea makes it fall apart - even in the utopia setting where AI is made completely ethically, and it works perfectly, and none of the issues I just mentioned apply - _people don't want creativity to be easy._ The effort _makes_ the art. There's no satisfaction in clicking a button and getting ten images fitting a description. Fortunately, it seems like while the general masses are happy to use AI image generators to get their approximation of what they want for free, the people who are serious about drawing as a medium aren't gonna take it. The people who will happily use generators weren't the people paying for commissions anyway, and so supporting yourself as an artist will probably remain reasonably possible for a good while longer - potentially forever. Art won't make you rich, but it's never been prone to that - it's something fun to pair with another job.
