99% unemployment by 2030 is not how tech adoption works. A quick reality check:
Automation replaces tasks faster than replacing entire jobs. Most roles are bundles of tasks; the last messy 10 to 20% is hardest and the most expensive to automate. Adoption is bottlenecked by integration debt, QA, compliance, liability, unions, and change management, not just model quality. Physical automation has hardware limits (robots, sensors, maintenance, energy, supply chains). You can’t manufacture and deploy enough robots worldwide that fast. Even when AI can do something, companies only switch when cost, reliability, and trust beat the status quo after taxes, risk, and rework. If unemployment ever approached those levels, you’d see policy intervention (UBI/job guarantees, incentives) long before “99% unemployment” stuck. Will AI/robots reshape tons of work? Absolutely. 99% of jobs gone in 5 years? Nah. Plan for rapid task automation, new workflows, and higher leverage per person, not a near-term consumer economy collapse.
