I kept putting off buying a new car for a long time because “EVs would be great soon” and “Self driving cars will be here in 2020. —Elon” But it never happened. There isn’t enough range yet for my needs in EVs, charging speed could be better, and there is not an even somewhat affordable family sized SUV, and you’d have to factor in all the costs of running high voltage cabling to the garage. So you combine that together and it’s still much too expensive. Then you still have gaps in the charging network, especially where I live, and especially for high speed chargers if you don’t have a Tesla, which I don’t want because Elon has turned evil. Meanwhile self driving cars are a cluster. They were making progress so quickly I think they just thought it would go on forever? But that “last mile” of getting it right turned out to be really hard. Just look at the messes some of them are creating in big cities out west with traffic jams and they aren’t able to handle it when their connection drops, lol. And people can disable them by sticking a cone on their hood. I will say, though, that the limited self driving features on my new car are really handy. They remove a lot of the fatigue from long trips on the highway and allow me to stay more focused on being a defensive driver than trying to keep my speed going with traffic or trying to constantly make small adjustments to stay in the center of a lane. But these features have been on cars for many years now, so it hasn’t advanced all that much. The main thing my car has that a lot of regular cars don’t is braking if you’re about to turn out on a blind spot into traffic that could hit you and forward obstacle avoidance.
