What kind of pisses me off is that . . . like, aside from relying on the public domain, there are artists who would be happy to voluntarily donate art to AI to improve the output because it seems like a cool technology. It could be a useful tool for generating references! Or backgrounds! It has potentially interesting applications! And you could, in theory, explicitly pay artists to create feed-in artwork for the purposes of filling gaps in the tech's abilities, as long as the artist was informed beforehand that this was what that specific piece of art was for.
But, no. That would take time, and money, so instead the art being fed into the AI is scraped off of search results and stolen from people who never had a chance to defend their labor and their copyright in the first place. 'Cause that bottom line matters more, right?
