I don’t understand how could someone compare using different pictures to create an image and referencing. Although it is a most common metaphor - humans’ brain and computers are not equivalent. At least in terms of the content of the memory.
A computer can and will take an image and replicate it with very minimal changes, almost none. Just like you will copy a text and paste it - it won’t change at all.
Humans’ memory is not perfect, and by design. When someone will recall something, they will pass through a recollection process ; meaning the memory isn’t recuperated, but reconstructed. Some parts will be clearer, others more forgotten - and this happens in accordance to a series of things that are usually specific to you ; your environment, needs, values… which mean that for the same event, two people could recall slightly different versions of it - if not focus on entirely different things. More than the processus of recollection, encoding itself will be impacted by the human behind the brain ; and therefore won’t be a 1/1 memory of what happened. Same thing as recalling a memory, when you see something, you will remember what matters to you.
Speaking from experience, even with a reference image, these processes will play in the drawing of said referenced objects. The face you draw will be heavily impacted by the idea you have of a face. There are many phenomenons such as the natural instinct to draw something slightly tilted straighter. To draw a face slightly turned away looking more towards us - and with that, your drawing will never look exactly like the reference image (except for some exceptions. I must admit I’m not that interested in photorealism.). So to answer the person whose comment genuinely asked what the difference was in humans drawing and ai creating such images - the answer is beyond simple. We’re humans, and therefore, imperfect. And that is a very good thing - because you wouldn’t have drawings that have so much of a personality behind them if not.
