This is a pretty multi-layered problem and I don't think automation is the problem. If anything, there are *certain* trucking positions that really ought to be automated. In particular, any shipment that would require multiple days of driving with a strict deadline. These are the ones where human drivers are more likely to cause accidents, and more costly to human drivers since they need to do a lot more preparation for eating and sleeping. For any shipment that takes less than a day, I think it makes sense to keep human drivers.
