Never mind AI, will humans ever become conscious? I tend to believe it might all be a delusion. I believe am what I'm typing in this comment under my own volition, but perhaps that's just a story that I construct in retrospect. Perhaps Sir Roger is the only person who is conscious and the rest of us might as well be NPCs - well, me anyway.
