AI manifesting bias (including racism) is important. But it might be more complicated than the simple picture of biased programmers impart their bias to the computer. Remember, originally AI was proposed to help us understand human brains. But now we focus on its computer science applications. An important sociology and neuroscience question is why so many different cultures evolved similar out-group biases. It could be a consequence of the architecture of the brain. For example, this might be a natural consequence of the way our brains simplify complex data. Similarly, AI could be "racist" because of the way that the algorithm works, as opposed to the human-assisted training mode. We won't really know if this is the case until people understand machine learning better. Two researchers who are among the top at understanding what AI does inside the algorithm are the husband-wife team, Krzakala and Zdeborova.
