I was a software engineer working mainly in startups in San Jose and a couple other cities. I've shipped 14 mass market consumer products. I'm brilliant right? Hell no. I understand software, water gardens, some home DIY and a couple other things. Clueless for 99.9% of everything else. I've always been amazed when people think a successful person is smart about everything. The opposite is normally true. To be successful a person needs focus in their field to the exclusion of almost everything else. This dude is a smart dude. No doubt he's great in his field. But he has confused sentience with sci fi. He's enamored with the idea of software becoming sentient. That's it. AI today is driven by big data and not emulating human thought. Originally AI did focus on trying to getting software to act like humans. When the internet came along we suddenly had amazing amounts of data which enabled this shift from cognitive thought to big data. I created bots for a short time. Super easy to get a bot to appear as a person in social media. Someone posts a picture and the bot says "Oh that's so cool." The poster will likely think the bot is a person....but that's not sentience. It's so stupid it doesn't even know what a picture actually is. All it knows is the pattern of a social media platform mechanics when a pic is posted. Then it looks into a database of thousands, millions of responses by actual humans (probably) and repeats one of those without a clue about what it's saying. That may appear as sentient, but isn't. Sentience is actually a very low bar. When people talk about AI they think of it as human thinking. That AI would be a very smart human. We already have 7+ billion of those systems walking around the Earth in people's craniums. Are you impressed? I'm not. Instead we could make software think differently from humans. Better? Maybe. But I'm pretty sure humans wouldn't listen so what's the point? For example, it certainly wouldn't be hard to create an AI that looked at a lot of data and spit out "Global warming is bad for humans." along with ways to reduce impact. But few humans would listen. And when the few who agreed experienced the ways to reduce impact most of them would switch sides. Humans are humans.
