I propose to let AI artists call themselves artists as some have artistic intent and instead classify those who don’t use AI as ‘natural artists’. However what will almost certainly happen is once there’s a movement to seek out ‘natural art’ - a significant number of AI artists will protest being othered and ask to be called ‘natural artists’ as well, writing think pieces of the naturalness of their art. The point is - it’s not about the term ‘artist’. I’m confident they don’t care what they are or aren’t called they simply want to put on the same cultural and social pedestal as traditional artists. Once there’s a line of delineation between AI art and traditional art, that removes the social and cultural cache of being an artist and that’s uncomfortable for them. If traditional artists decided to abandon the term ‘artist’ tomorrow and began calling themselves ‘expressers’, it wouldn’t be long until they’d gunning that term too. It comes down to this - if you’re a bad artist and believe, like I do, that anyone can become a competent artist no matter how untalented then there’s no argument against learning. If you instead believe that despite any efforts, you’ll never become competent then ask yourself why its important to become competent in the first place. Art is fundamentally about self-expression, and if that’s your goal - who cares about your art’s competence. If instead, art for you is about social validation and possibly a career path then unfortunately not everyone gets to be what they want - some people are too short, too tall, too thin, too wide, too unattractive, too lacking in charisma to do the job they want to do - accept the harsh reality. In plainer terms - if you don’t believe you’ll ever improve as an artist - nothing is stopping you from expressing yourself and developing your own style, even if its unappealing to a large percentage of people, however if your goal is about social validation or monetary gain, accept that its unlikely to happen and learn to live with it. Alternatively, adopt the view that you can become competent enough to satisfy those two goals, and stop bitching and start learning. Those are the healthiest choices, anything else is delusion.
