I hear a lot that "oh in the past...blah blah...and it led to more jobs". But AI is different altogether. What we are seeing isn't a shift in jobs type (e.g. print > web) but the automation of intelligence and creativity altogether. For historical perspective, consider how engines (steam/gas) affected horses. A horse's unique 'skill' was that it afforded moving heavy things fast. When machine engines were invented horses were reduced to novelty pets. AI has already surpassed the average human in creativity and intelligence (in its first 1000 days of existence). A human whose intelligence and creativity is no longer valuable isn't simply temporarily 'displaced', it is made obsolete. I can understand the sense of safety more experienced designers may feel as their skillsets are harder to replicate with current AI tools. However, at some point the creative directors and art directors will be the 'bottleneck', slowing down progress and profits. And we all know that our clients care about speed, cost and quality. If AI can deliver they won't care just as we don't care that most of our products today are built by robots, not humans.
