Yes, these guys were stupid and deserved to be laughed at. However! Consider that ChatGPT has not experienced a single second of legal training. It was not explicitly exposed to legal texts. It has not been trained to understand rulings nor what the desirable and undesirable rulings in a case are, from the defendant's nor from the the prosecutor's points of view. It essentially knows nothing about law and can't do much more than reproduce text that answers simple legal questions that have already been asked and answered elsewhere. This will change. Seeing what ChatCPT can can do for software development, for which ChatGPT has undergone explicit training and which as a field is far more dynamic than law, there is a 0% chance that AI will not take over the practice of law and do it better than any human. This will take some time, but this is coming. Doctors, or at least parts of what a general practitioner does, will also be taken over by AI. There is absolutely no technical reason this won't work. The only thing that will prevent it is legal regulations. Law and the medicine are both very prestigious fields to work in. IMHO it's somewhat ironic that both belong to the easiest white collar jobs to replace entirely by AI.
