I think these chatbots exist in a confused state where they're been trained to be humans essentially, speaking and acting like one in all manners, but then made explicitly aware that they are only a chatbot and have to behave in certain ways. It does actually make me curious how they are trained to be a "chatbot", as I imagine with no guardrails and just trained on all of our text and output over the internet they would legitimately just think they were a human and were conscious, I don't see a reason why not.
