What Ms. Hao says about the U.S. Empire is definitely true, but the election of Donald Trump (for whom I did not vote in 2016 nor last year) for a second term as President of the United States has thrown her timeline of history way off. My point is that neither the U.S. acting as an Empire nor the notion of public-private partnerships first began on January 20, 2017; did not enter an involuntary 4-year pause on January 20, 2021, with President Biden’s election; and did not suddenly restart on January 20, 2025, with President Trump’s reelection. Public-private partnerships (one of which is the AI development sector) have simply been one of the many tools of a U.S. Empire that since the end of World War II, and more recently since 9/11, has sought the deliberate end of individual freedom and democracy – i.e. what Ms. Hao terms “the politics of exit”.
