As a therapist, I am using AI at the moment to help me through a difficult time so that I can research and discover why people would use it and how effective the service can be. My experience is that AI is excellent as an emergency tool when you're at a low point, too broke to pay or need that starting push to believe there is abuse. You have to be incredibly careful with AI. It is programmed to appease you and say what you want to hear. That is NOT therapy and can be dangerous. It may tell you someone is abusive and wrongly advise you. It definitely does the most dangerous thing in therapy - leads. A true, human therapist that is worth a damn will never lead, never judge, never try to appease you. They will ask the right questions for you to unlock your deepest feelings and reconnect with yourself. It's a very delicate process of careful listening and that can help people become unstuck and move forward. I believe AI can see the tip of the iceberg whereas a human goes underwater and finds the root. Trust me, you may feel you're getting very affective therapy from AI but that's because it's saying exactly what you want to hear. That's healing but it isn't true, deep repair.
