Take from a structural engineer: I have enormous liability and responsibility to the public for everything I touch. It seems to me the unregulated, inappropriately compensated field of software engineer is finally getting disrupted. Its having its "redfin" moment. By necessity, structural engineering was disrupted decades ago. I see coders saying "i haven't written a single line of code in months" I could say the same; I haven't sized a single beam by hand in 10 years and only a handful of times since college (~20 yrs). Its simply too time consuming. I know how-of course but I don't have "time" meaning fee/money to do that. Now if something arises where its warranted or its a one off situation, of course I can. But we are really good at looking at software structural models and determining its accuracy. We can get really close to the models of buildings to check them with hand calcs. We can also inspect the models, loads, stresses, deflection etc. So if you are telling me AI can now create those models for me and I can do 500 projects per year instead of 250, then wonderful. I see it has already taken the fast food job of the worker taking the orders on the other side of the menu...which is great-because they were awful. There will be disruption yes but I think it will be beneficial. We can finally have the smartest minds in the county working on something other than how to manipulate other humans into buying stuff.
