Call me naive but as a voracious reader, I’m not worried. I read non fiction for originality of thought and research which, at least in its current iteration, AI can’t do - it simply parrots. And I read fiction similarly- I want writers who can render universal human experiences with a unique and nuanced perception.
I’ll probably read a couple of AI books out of curiosity but they wont replace real writers for me, in the same way I have no interest in reading books by ‘celebrities’ that were ghost written (for me the only acceptable genre for ghost writers is biography).
The one area which might be impacted is genre fiction - but even here, when I think about my favourite genre writers they have unique and distinctive voices. Maybe that is easier to replicate? But I think for serious readers it will make us gravitate even more towards originality.
I also hope it will become a legal requirement that all AI products are clearly labelled as such!
