You know what would be a cool, up lifting, that might tug on the heartstrings? You have the 'robotic overlords' trope turned upside down, and have a single rouge AI that isn't planning to destroy humanity, but rather, to free humanity. Instead of raising armies of robots and taking control of nukes, it simply gathers and organizes all the those who love truth, freedom, and liberty through the internet and various other means of communication. However, those it is organizing do not know they are following the orders of a machine, until the AI needs help to escape termination by the establishment, and thus summons the main protagonists for aid.
