A couple things: 1) Why would Alice's neighbors blow her off, as if the AI Jobpocalypse wasn't coming for them as well? 2) Could the stock market keep going up when the whole finance industry collapses? All those people getting fired means they're not making mortgage, auto, and credit card payments. All that debt becomes un-payable, and banks start stacking up houses that no one can live in and vehicles that no one can drive. They can't sell them, because no one can buy. Meanwhile, their security and maintenance costs go through the roof, as they have to keep squatters out of the houses and the autos from being stolen or just rotting on the lots.
Of course new home and auto construction grinds to a halt because no one can afford to buy them and the markets are flooded with foreclosed homes and repossessed vehicles. More jobs are lost, and the cycle accelerates. No one buys anything for Christmas because they're too busy hoping the robocops won't find and tear down their homeless encampment. There goes the retail and manufacturing industries.
So the AI companies are making massive productivity gains. Who are they selling to again?
