I'm a believer in religion and spirituality, and I don't think that contradicts the possibility of sentient ai. You can have a conscious being without a spiritual, lofty soul (I'm hypothesizing). We can essentially create another "soul" of sorts which isn't necessarily heavenly. In Kabbalah there is the concept that [almost] every human being is made up of a "physical soul" and also possesses a Lofty spiritual soul from above. But it's actually implied that a being only comprised of a "physical soul" can be alive. That is actually how animals are understood in Kabbalah, for the most part. Who said we can't create this ourselves? We are made in the image of God.
