Alex, you are probably not going to read this comment since you went viral but, trust me, I feel you. It's not just you. The same thing happened to me. I've worked as a professional technical/legal translator for over 15 years. I speak four languages, and this is literally the one thing I have trained to do since college. My daily routine consisted of getting up, turning on my laptop while having breakfast, and then by the time I was done having my coffee, my agencies would be emailing me all kinds of assignments, from immigration documents and state government statutes, through sports teams' websites, to engineering manuals of farming equipment. I was one of the better guys in my field, and there were commissions essentially every day, including weekends and holidays. I made enough money over the years that I even managed to get a new home thanks to this job, and I remember even having arguments with my girlfriend at the time because I almost never had enough time to spend with her since the demand for my work was so great. And then at some point in last 2 years, it all began fizzling out. Agencies would rarely call me in, and I would frequently spend entire weeks playing through my backlog of games on my PC because there was virtually nothing to do. I was then told that clients (some of them major companies) were no longer requesting commissions because it was all being done by AI. The AI translations aren't even that good – they're mostly soulless and pretty mediocre, in fact – but they're "good enough," so they no longer feel that humans are needed. Fast forward to 2025, my income has now dropped to like 20 percent of what it used to be, and that's only because I'm so good at what I do (I still manage to get commissions from old clients here and there). Most of my peers are unemployed at this point, and I know that even my remaining clients will probably not stick around for long. I honestly don't know what to do. I mean, seriously, what are you supposed to when you're in your late 30s and the one job you have trained your entire life to do disappears pretty much overnight? Start over from scratch? Go back to school and then compete with people in their early 20s? Go flip burgers? Start selling meth? Spend all my savings and then starve? 🤷🏻‍♂ It's getting harder and harder out there, and I don't think governments are taking this issue seriously enough.
