Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it’s a problem when people who have vast amounts of social capital and scientific respect start talking about science and tech outside their areas of expertise and experience. There are so many problems with AI that we need to be screaming about every second. But, one simple example I haven’t seen in the comments mention yet is interviewing for a job. Go ahead, NDT, apply for a dozen jobs and tell me how many times you are: interviewed by an AI, rejected by an AI. We’re not even going to get into how much worse it became to apply for jobs that get bombarded with AI entries. This guy is very smart, but he has way too much influence to be talking this confidently about something outside of his expertise. This is so much bigger than an AI beating us at chess… It’s so utterly off-base. “I don’t see why we would value it.” Cool, great, awesome. I agree! But that doesn’t matter because corporations do and they are using it to replace creative jobs, technical jobs, white collar jobs and we do not live in an economy/society that’s prepared to start providing UBI. Re: The Industrial Revolution killing certain industries is a bad analogy because it also created a ton of technical jobs. GenAI is not creating more jobs than it replaces. It’s not even close. “Be creative and find something AI can’t do?” Okay, so everyone is supposed to be cool with wasting a fortune on a skilled degree they thought was safe to go find a job as a blue collar worker for minimum wage (no shade to those people. They deserve a livable wage.)? Wealthy people who don’t need to apply for work need to check themselves and defer to people who are actually suffering the consequences of this technology. This shit makes my blood boil. “You can stay ahead of AI by innovating.” I’m curious what percentage of jobs he thinks will stick around because companies are willing to pay someone a shitload more to do a slightly better job. Companies will *happily* provide a worse consumer and worker experience/product of it saves them money. It’s just such rose-tinted optimism.
