We're starting to see deterioration in AI images because they're feeding on public images, which includes AI-generated images. Basically it's a copy of a copy of... and eventually the quality deteriorates to a point where there's a noticeable drop in quality. Deliberately "poisoning" images in this fashion can only accelerate this process, especially as the way an AI "views" an image is not the same way that a human being does.
