Knowing all of the skills I use to drive, the observation required, the endless judgements & decisions - getting AI to do that is surprisingly difficult, as they've found. That self-drive cars are much safer, is impressive.
But, it's generally easier in the US: lots of cities & towns are based on a grid layout, many of the main roads are wide & clear, you're not supposed to jaywalk. In Britain, pedestrians can cross anywhere, our country roads can be single vehicle & incredibly varied, we have a lot of roundabouts & mini-roundabouts (with plenty who don't know how to use them!). It's going to be tough for AI here.
