Im not going to say that there's absolutely no artistic merit behind AI art, because i do think its possible for there to be some level of expression involved into the imagining of prompts and selection of images, and i think there IS a level of relationship formed between a person and an image they've generated, even though they have not created it themselves, somewhat similar to how a good portion of the artistic value of photography comes from the subject, which typically is not created by the photographer, by way of the photographer's relationship with it. But obviously, whatever artistic merit exists in AI art is going to be extremely shallow compared to other art forms BECAUSE its so easy to do, and so easy to put little to no thought into. The real halmark of art is control, the ability to express your relationship with something exactly as you want to. Yes, you can control AI images through prompts and manual selection, but there are so many details that won't be yours. You are relying on a machine to make 90% of the creative decisions for you. Even with photography, you control the composition, lighting, and everything else in between in order to capture exactly what you want to capture about your subject, and (if you're a nature photographer like me), you have to spend A LOT of time waiting for the right opportunity to get the shot you want, exerting control over the unpredictability of nature through sheer patience. I highly doubt most people making AI art put that kind of time into finding the perfect image output. Again, i wont dismiss it as art in its entirety, and i dont doubt it has potential as a creative tool for digital art, but i think you do lose out on much of what art is through through the loss of the bulk of the artistic process. You're never going to feel a perfect image you created with a couple clicks as deeply as a kinda shitty one you made yourself And this is to say nothing of the ethical and environmental concerns associated with AI.
