In my utterly uneducated and underqualified opinion, the major missing component to machine intelligence is one of a quantum nature.
I could very well be off-base, but it seems to me that the quantum weirdness of the likes of superpositions and entanglement may be a necessary component to sentience.
Oversimply comparing a quantum computer compared to a binary one, the latter can only perform linear computations, while the latter is able to come upon a decision after receiving prerequisite information.
Reminds me of bit of the human mind. How we come to decisions automatically, before even having the chance to think about and process it. Of course those impulses can be overturned based on further input, but it seems to me there's some kind of quantum bullshit going on here.
