Some info. I am not Indonesian but lived and worked in Indonesia for 10 years (moved there on a whim) before moving (again) to the Netherlands 4 years ago. I did project management and tech consultancy for most of my stay in Indonesia. I worked with multiple companies there, some big some small and know the nightmare of the education system they go through. Let's just say, it's not really an optimal system. I tried to build whole teams from local talent but it was impossible. The only solution I could come up with was to hire motivated fresh graduates and throw them in a team of freelance remote international employees (mostly from russia and eastern europe). I tried working with locals with years of experience, it was hopeless. You needed to break all their ingrained habits and reintroduce fundamental knowledge to them all while having to produce results in current projects. Not to mention having to deal with fragile egos of 'senior devs'. I refused to deal with that so I went for fresh graduates who were enthusiastic about actually learning and producing results. It was a rough experience but eventually results spoke for themselves. It's not that the locals didn't want to learn but that they needed an environment where proper guidance is available and producing results is required. Chat gpt really has nothing to do with the whole thing. I understand that it might seem so from the conversation and the dude in the video pretending to he an AI dev just because he 'trained' a language model doesn't help negating the stigma. To be honest, AI should be seen as an amazing opportunity there as it opens opportunities to a learning experience that they really lack. It's just instead of using it to learn the fundamentals and build their knowledge base from there up to more complex topics, many people seem to enjoy seeing code generated the way they saw it in movies and became complacent thinking since they saw it getting generated so they understand it now. My point is, I wouldn't blame AI itself. It's the complacency of those involved who misuse AI just to inflate their ego or sense of self worth. It's like they lie the lie and then believe it themselves. An odd state of affairs, I tell you.
