Consciousness doesn't exist beyond what humans have come up with through observing themselves and the universe. It's just a name for a socially constructed concept. We have drawn the line ourselves, but the universe doesn't care. For it, we are simply collections of matter in space, the same as a robot, a penguin, or a quasar.
What I mean is that "consciousness" or even "life" only exists within our experience, and to assert that it exists outside of that is a humanocentric view of the universe.
