I’m a teacher and I think there needs to be a balance. I make sure to implement both tech and pencil/paper in my classroom. Students are expected to take paper/pencil notes, but I also teach them how to use the internet for research, how to use design skills in Canva, etc… because technology is streamlined across the world. The problem is that we are forced to teach to the text in public schools (this is not the case for private schools). It all comes down to money. Teaching kids how to pass a test doesn’t leave room for teaching children critical thinking and problem solving skills. That is what is missing from the classroom. It’s not the tech, it’s the shift to the test and the dumbing down of our society as a whole. Edit: I teach 5th graders, so having some kind of tech in the classroom is a must as we are moving into the higher grades. Younger kids, I believe, should not have tech in the classroom… however, the problem is that they are still bombarded at home by screens. For the older kids, it’s not the use of Chromebooks for Canva design, etc. The problem with older children is the use of cell phones and social media… Anyone under the age of 18 should not have access to smartphones or any type of social media. If they need a phone, give them one that has pre-programmed numbers in it and is only used for basic text and calls to those pre-programmed numbers. Our district has blocked A.I. for student use on our devices as well, however I think that students should have A.I., but not until they’re older and in conjunction with courses on how to use A.I. properly. Otherwise, they will still use it at home and for all of the reasons that the video points out. If you teach kids how to use something properly, or teach internet skills and safety, etc, then that is fine… simply because these technologies are here and they’re not going away. If you try to keep kids blocked from it, that doesn’t make it go away and they will find a way to use it somehow… but with no knowledge of what and whatnot to do.
