I see two parallel roads in the near future, 5 to 10 years:
AI and Abstraction in coding (coding in "plain English"). Since big tech invested heavy in AI, I feel like they are going to keep pushing it like the metaverse back then, up until it dies out to morph to something else. Precisely, they will try to shoehorn "AI independent coding" into actual dev scrum/agile projects that are already chaotic.
They will sell themselves as more efficient dev companies because using AI blablalba. In reality, it will create so much chaos that they will hire double the amount of engineers they would without AI, just to fix it constantly and pretend it works, so investors keep pouring money, and they can somewhat deliver something to their end customers. That will increase the amount of jobs in big tech, create another bubble for the next 10 years. Just ride it until it burst. Going bubble to bubble is the new standard since big tech don't innovate anymore.
As per "plain english abstraction" the future that I see is way darker. Since corporations can't replace people with AI, I think they will make an effort to deprave devs from their core skill, building software. How? With plain english coding. It won't be plain english tho. Every big corp will make sure to create a proprietary language with their own convention and architecture even tho it's plain english.
They will then start the propaganda for the young and mid career devs to move into learning those languages and avoid the hassle of learning c++ or any native language. Big tech will pay well in the beginning to bait, give a sense of safety, and create the false self belief for those people that they are actual engineers... Once the bulk of the workforce will have moved to this type of coding languages, by then they will have setup automation, with or without AI, relying on this proprietary plain language, and fire all those new age coders.
The difference being that by then, those unemployed "devs" will have 0 core skills to rely on. After 3 to 5 years working in a big tech in plain language, they will realize their knowledge isn't even transferable to a competitor and they can't even build their own application because they don't code in any native open source language. Dystopian.
