We have never had automation wipe out such a large percentage of jobs in such a short period of time as what we appear to have queued up in the next ten years. Saying that we will all just become wildly successful gig economy workers, individually bringing in almost double the current median household income in the US, is naïve at best.
That idyllic gig economy that tech bros are using to try and convince us (and themselves) that we aren't headed straight into a dystopian hellscape looks to me like a bunch of people doing Uber and Doordash type jobs, only instead of that being a side hustle that is your only source of income (i.e, you are really f-ed). If we keep pushing the delusional narrative that the gig economy will come to the rescue, there is not going to be any political will to make needed changes until it is way way too late and the 0.1% have damn near everything while the rest of us barely cover our living expenses by working 60+ hour weeks. This is not going to end well.
