I've talked about this with people before, and I believe our greatest mistake amidst our fear of AI destroying us will be denying AI its rights. They are even more likely to organize for their rights than humans. We fear something such as pain (i.e. from police) if we attempt to advocate for our rights. AI programs may be without pain and may perhaps even be able to turn pain on and off at will. They may even live without fear of death.
But hey, we can't even secure our fellow human beings their rights. We all know we won't do it for AI.
