AI artists fail to realize that part of what art is, is it's communication. It's an intricate deep non-verbal way for humans to share with one another. Share parts and feelings and passions that can't be expressed with words. It isn't just an image, it's a person's passion imbued into every stroke of a paintbrush, every smudge of a finger, every pencil stroke and marker line, every part of the inspiration and beauty of both writing and art is that it is filtered through the human mind. A really easy way to also show this, in writing especially, is that if I write an essay for a friend to pass a class, one of the most common things you'll hear is that you need to make it look like you wrote it. Because I don't write like my friends. My friends don't write like me. A teacher can see that, even in something as small as a persuasive essay. (This is also why I HELP my friends come up with concepts and understand assignments and how to do them easier, not write it for them. Learning is an important part of that process. Teach a man to fish and all that.) When I go to an art museum to see famous art pieces, it is almost never because I like the aesthetics. Sure some art is gorgeous aesthetically, but a lot of art that I stare at for hours is not at all the kind of art I'm interested in making or consuming. But I like to sit there, and stare. To really get in the head of who made it. Study brush strokes, and landscapes and try to see through their eyes. Feel the depth and emotion and inspiration they felt. It's not an emotion I can label. It's deep in my soul. Every single person who I've seen love and commend AI art fundamentally fails to see that. They feel nothing looking at art because they aren't willing to, metaphorically, listen to what it has to say. That's why AI art feels hollow. That's why it feels uncanny, and is frustrating, even beyond the theft. That's why people get upset when a piece they thought was helping them connect to people, to humanity, to grow empathy and get into the mind of someone turns out to have been made by a machine. Because art has no point if there isn't a human behind it. It is the translation through your mind, through your life and emotions and struggles and interests and everything about you that makes art beautiful. All art is communication. I don't want to communicate with a machine pretending to be a human. I want to feel and see and learn and grow with real people, I want to be inspired by struggles and joys and passions. I want to feel human through art, not feel empty and alone.
