If you fight self driving cars. Then they will just put in a special line just for a ride share car. It's going to cost you a lot more to have a lane just for the self driving cars.
The other solution is to give people a virtual driving test. If they get into a traffic accident. They have to take a test. If you pass then it's like the accident never happened. If you don't then you don't have the privilege to drive. Your vehicle registration, insurance and drivers license is suspended. If you drive without being able to pass the test. Then you should get 40 hours of highway cleanup. The second time you get 30 days in jail. A third time and you get charged with use of a deadly weapon.
I mean if I can total my car and get into another and total it two days later. We have a problem with what we are worried about when it comes to driving. We all drive so we should be able to pass the test.
The fact is that all the stuff that you have to have in your car is actually making you drive more stupidly. Accidents have more than doubled in the last twenty years. Think about it. Did you have a infotainment system in a car in the 2000. Probably not. Most cars didn't get them until 2010.
You say that cars are safer. Then why do more people die in auto accidents now then before they had seatbelts. I think that we are the problem. Until you solve this. others are going to try to find a solution for you. If you don't like what they are trying to do. Then ask for something else.
My question is. How many people have the waymo cars killed? How many crashes have they been in? How many people have gone to court for trying to hit a waymo car? Did you think of something else to make our streets safer? Could you pass a virtual driving test? Can a waymo car pass the same driving test?
Why are you trying to stop change? If you don't want something to change you have to be the change that you want. The world doesn't stand still. It is always changing and if you stand still you will have no say in what happens.
Ask for a virtual driving test and punishment if you don't pass. Then you can just say that you don't know how to punish a computer if it gets into an accident and can't pass the test. Simple
