Self-driving vehicles would be a major improvement to a society that embraces it and invests in it: creating the infrastructure with sensors in the environment and making all vehicles networked and communicating with each other. Doing it as they are now, the tech is probably 10 to 20 years out for fully self driving vehicles that you can sleep in while it drives you somewhere legally.
