"No matter why you use the generator, it still benefits from being used." I'd actually disagree, there. "Environmental impacts" aren't for free, and they don't generate anyone money. They are, at best, the byproduct of the cheapest option available. More expensive options may have less environmental impacts, but that doesn't meant that environmental impacts don't cost money. They're like a tax you pay for taking the easy road -- one that grows slowly, but exponentially. Art generated by AI is essentially all Nightshaded in and of itself, if I understand model collapse correctly (studies show that as little as 10% of a model's input consisting of AI generated output has a noticeable impact on the performance of the model). Nevermind that the cost to train and run these models is still a cost, especially when you consider that most of these models are being provided essentially for free. OpenAI (ChatGPT's parent company) is losing $5-7 billion a year just trying to train better models -- the GPUs and the electricity doesn't come for free. The people who make those things expect to be paid real money, not hopes and dreams.
All this to say, use and abuse them while they're free. Soon they won't be, because the debtor _will_ come knocking, and those companies _will_ go under. But all that "art" you made is still going to be out there, poisoning future attempts to create a good AI ever again.
