I dont want to come across as dismissive or dehumanising, i will just give my personal take as a gen Z son of two public school teachers. A trait i share with almost all of my generation is, i dont want to work, no one can afford anything, people dont feel like they are working to get a house (that they own) and start a family, and extra work can go to luxuries or hobbies. People seem to barely get by on multiple jobs. Plus we all know, an uncomfortable % of jobs are whats called ''bullshit jobs'' were they could be erased and nothing would change, except some people would lose their job, they dont produce anything. The amount of people that will answer ''oh i just work at an office, im not quite sure what i do'' when asked about their job is staggering. So in terms of meaning and dehumanisation, im not scared to not have to work, my identity isnt really tied to that, i try to be productive mind you, but i do that by helping people i know, not really as a job. If anything my official job now would be as caretaker of my disabled dad, and while i love him to death, and will help him as long as he needs me to, we both agree that it would be dope to have a robot do that, so i dont have to wake up in the middle of the night to help with any emergency. And hell, with how AI is going, perhaps my father can just be healed so he can be independent, that would make us both happier, and re-humanise us. Because let me tell you, i already feel dehumanised, and i dont think AI can make it worse. Then when it comes to the broader economy, i know billionaires are scary, and most of them dont have our best interests at heart, but they simply cannot afford to just put half the population out of a job and what? Let us starve? Keep us in absolute poverty? Who is gonna buy their stuff? And even if they just create an economy full of nothing but automated corporations. Do you really think 100 million people will just stand by and do nothing? Do you think the other half of the country will just watch because they get to keep their jobs? And how do you stop that many people? With the army? Of minimum wage soldiers? Even for the most sociopathic billionaire, its just worth it to give everyone a high standard of living, and AI will make that trivial technologically. So unless AI goes rogue and we all die, i dont see things going anywhere but up for all of us.
