First we need to figure out what consciousness even entails before we can discuss if AI is likely to become it. If we consider consciousness as an awareness of oneself and the ability to analyze one's thoughts, then i do believe that AI will achieve that very soon. Chatbots or language generating texts most likely wont be the ones to do this however, as their sole function is to predict what word will come next given all the words that came before it, based upon patterns learned from vast amounts of training data. I think that a conscious AI will be created when we create an artificial intelligence that closely mimicks the function of a brain, and let it grow without any specific input/output required.
