AI-using disabled artist So, I'm a disabled artist with a disabled artist friend. I've aphantasia and AuDHD, which is relevant in than I'm a spoonie. Not having the energy and will power to finish my work is common. My friend has a lot of body control issues, and when she wants to do art the most is usually when she's trapped on the floor, unable to draw a straight line. Now, let me tell you, I started with drawing on paper, and I still do. As well as digitally. My original dream was being able to draw something, then give it color and oomoh with AI. A glow up. Spmetimes, just to add things that I know should be there, but I can't bring it into being. Nowadays, I mostly use art for information. Due to my autism, I have dyspraxia that messes up my memory, including short term. Coupled with aphantasia and an inability to measure with my eyes (probably the aphantasia, and includes length and to an extent, proportion), I found it difficult to switch to jsing references after I discovered that I had aphantasia a couple of years ago. I've found that a lot of my art is inaccurate due to not using references for decades. None of this means that I can't draw or do art myself. I do do those things. But I often use AI to flesh out a concept in my mind, figure out what it actually looks like. I enjoy using it in digital work to get what I already have closer. I also use Stable Diffusion on my own PC when I can for environmental safety, and using models that are opt-in, because I don't encourage art-theft. I admit that I also use sites for quick inspiration to help me see what something looks like - I play a lot of text-based games where a description is just a concept for me until I get a generator to show me. I know I should cut down on this, or find generators that are also opt-in. I use online generators for making music, because I have no skill in that department. My friend doesn't have a computer, nor an ability to sit at one, in order to make her art. And though I do a lot of anime drawn art, she and I share a passion for photo manipulation. I first got into AI because I wanted to find stock images that I don't have to remember to show the origin of - because if I forgot, that'd be like death, but I couldn't keep track. Anyways, she uses AI to layer meaningful imagery and symbolism to express herself. She likely uses a site, though I can't speak to which and whether they are opt-in. She has expressed, however, how amazing AI has been for her, since she is definitely an artist of other mediums, but she can spend days or weeks trapped away from them, with all this inspiration in her mind. Finding a means to create that requires just voice-to-text and some tapping on a tablet has unlocked so much that she thought was forever lost to her as her disability grew worse with age. When it comes to whether or not the art she or I makes is 'real' art, I'd like to remind people that it's our ideas, our creativity, that uses the AI as a tool. It *can* be used to steal art and damage the planet, but it also *can* be used as a creative tool. Use AI responsibly, and make sure you choose tools that are not causing harm.
