Not much about the refferences as Disney themselves have reused sketches to save time and money, specially in their 2d movies, but yeah ai can never replace human animation, as they need someone who understand anatomy points, emotions and common sense to review everything.
Sure, it could come in handy to save some time and after the same studio feeds it with human made stuff by them, when sth cannot be imagined and then check it to correct stuff if it gives a frame by frame parallel version but as i said, it would be a complement, not a replacement.
The same way rotoscope 2d jumped to computer generated 3d or a mix, it could happen here too. But as i said, never replace humans. i am no expert though.
