As a software engineer i have mixed feelings about AI in general and "generative" AI in particular.
On one hand, it is a genuinely amazing piece of technology years ahead of the curve that has some real useful moral applications.
On the other hand it's use currently is plagued by immoral usage (direct Comercial use of ai art, academic misconduct, etc...), attempting to use it to replace real jobs,and because it is so early vs the hardware to properly support it, it is woefully inefficient which is bad environmentally.
However despite the consequences to the environment caused by its inefficiency, I am glad the software got ahead of the curve. Because now it's still relatively easy to see the cracks and gives us more time to have the moral discussions that will hopefully lead to regulation, before hardware catches up and ai gets too hard to spot.
