The aparience of consciousness is almost indistinguishable from consciousness, but it is not the same. As Harari would say, and I agree, AI is intelligent but not conscious. It has no feelings. See the work of Antonio Damasio on patients with a damaged vmPFC. Now are this people less conscious? Perhaps. But ChatGPT is ultimately like talking to a corporate PR representative, which we all know have no soul to speak of.
