Hey. I am an aspiring writer (incl. comics writer), who LOVES being able to generate AI images of my characters; something I haven't got the funds to pay artists for. As a life-long comics fan, I am all for artists' rights and compensation (it's due to legal and governmental heinous neglect that such rights are not better protected), and yet I have difficulty understanding/accepting the abject animosity from artists towards this new technology. I have watched this video, and I have discussed this with many people in forums dedicated to art, and I certainly sympathize with lost revenue, involuntary copyrights infringements, etc., and yet...! Looking at this like a historian, what's unfolding is like when other technological tools were first introduced. Machines taking the jobs of factory workers. Photography first believed to be "replacing" painting. Or you can go even further back in history to even more basic tools - the first invention of hammers and nails would have been a game-changer, and stripped those who made mud-huts or whatever of their jobs. Progress cannot be halted. There is a cost, yes, but it seems to me that the REAL issue is a societal one. Nowadays we live in a rich society; we ought to have a universal basic income, so people - incl. artists - didn't depend on diverse odd jobs for their survival. When new technologies like these happen, society should do something to cover the human cost and help people. I think, ideally, the majority of art and culture should be freely available to people (remember the old hacker adage, "information wants to be free"? Didn't many of us in the earlier days of the internet used to be anarchists?), and that the government/state should ensure the comfortable income of all people, incl. artists. This is a utopian view, perhaps, but it could be realistic if we fight for it, if we debate it, if we put it on the agenda. In short, I think this is mainly a political issue! This is about working class people being continually stripped of rights, money and power. Liberties are not granted; they are taken, and we, the people, have been remiss in our duty to protect our own rights and interests. We have not been critical enough of the system that lords it over us. And this aspect doesn't seem to be part of what people are talking about, which strikes me as odd and, perhaps, ignorant. We should demand a more humanistic society, with a greater emphasis on art and culture, and ways to encourage and provide for those who want to produce art. I know this is a longer term goal which doesn't put food on an artist's table today or tomorrow, but I think it is the real crux of the issue. The people need to retake control of the narrative - as it is, we're kind of just aping neo-liberal talking points and reducing everything to a question of personal income. A question which everybody in the working classes are constantly worried about, and which the ruling classes don't care about on our behalf, or do anything about. We need to take our concerns to our political and corporate leaders and demand ways to opt out, while still deserving the basic human right of food, housing, shelter, education, health, transportation, etc. A huge part of this entire issue goes away if nobody's livelihood is threatened because everybody gets a universal basic income. This is what the conversation should be about. We need and deserve compensation from our rich elite, and we must demand it. Meanwhile, I don't think the "human touch" will ever die out or be properly replicated by AI art, so I think artists should keep working on their stuff. I think there will be people who will want to pay for it still. Even if the market will also change. I think artists should incorporate AI elements into their work. A combination of human and AI generated work might create a whole new field and type of art.
